Notes and stories:
There are three large areas of dark purple irises in my front yard. Every spring, after daffodils retreat to dormancy, irises occupy the main stage. Irises require little care and propagate quickly through the root system, aka rhizomes. Last fall, I decided to dig out some roots of the overcrowded irises, hoping to give room to tiger lilies.
As I was searching for a good poem for iris, I found MET Museum’s website about Van Gogh’s painting of irises and roses. No words can be more descriptive and more beautiful.
